How to listen skills are never offered as part of any formal education and training. Listening is probably the most critical aspect of the selling process. Yet, it is usually the weakest part of a salesperson’s skill set.  
 
The two essential rules of effective listening are:
 
1. First, listen carefully with the intent to UNDERSTAND.
2. Second, listen clearly with the intent to RESPOND.

There are many secrets to becoming a good listener, but the one that encompasses them all is: Just Shut Up!
