“A belief is not an idea held by the mind; it is an idea that holds the mind.” – Elly Roselle

Do you know how elephants are trained to stay where they are? The trainers use a rope tied around one of their massive legs with the other end attached to a peg in the ground. Can the peg and rope really hold back the elephant? Absolutely not!

Then why does it work? Because elephants grow up believing it will. Maybe they tried pulling away when they were young with no success. Perhaps they were injured by their action. After enough failures, they stop trying. They no longer test the restraint and confine themselves when tethered to the rope. This is a perfect metaphor for how we are held captive by disempowering beliefs that aren’t even real.

I have known many people holding themselves captive with their own ‘elephant tether’ during my life and career.

The power of ‘elephant tethers’ to restrain you is only in your imagination. You can free yourself from these tethers to enjoy life and achieve your goals.

Action exercise

So what is holding you back? Is it your level of education or skill? Is it your attitude? Is it your current occupation or job? Is it your environment or health? What is setting the speed for achieving your goals? Remember, whatever you have learned, you can unlearn. Whatever situation you have gotten yourself into, you can probably get yourself out of.

List one disempowering belief that is holding you prisoner.

Now, write down ten ways in which you know you must take action to set yourself free.

Review these efforts each day and journal your progress.

“The biggest obstacle to creating a wonderful life is self-limiting beliefs. A self-limiting belief is an idea you have that you are limited in some way, in terms of time, talent, intelligence, money, ability, or opportunity.” – Brian Tracy
